Despite his material success and outward appearance of happiness, James Conrad feels empty inside. He is spending his 50th birthday alone in South Florida when he decides to take a drive along Alligator Alley into the depths of the Everglades. Searching for childhood memories of his great uncle—a man who left his family behind to live on a Seminole Indian reservation—James discovers his small town definition of success may all be a ruse. When given the chance to make a real change, James Conrad must make the hardest decision of his life.

Alligator Alley is the story of one man's struggle with his own destiny, but it could be the story of anyone facing change in his or her life. As Robinson states with simple eloquence, “This book asks a very basic question—if you could change, would you?”

The lead character is very relatable to any middle-aged man, caught in the rat-race, who suspects there is more to life, but can't yet find a way to jump off the hamster wheel. The flashbacks were a bit abrupt at times, so working the year/era into the narrative earlier, for those chapters, would smooth the transitions. Though a few years since published, the technology and internet references still hold fairly true. I feel men may enjoy it more than lady readers being the narration is always from a male character, and women have smaller roles. I have suggested it to my friends that know Florida well, and can easily "see" the places covered in the book.

Alligator Alley edition by Rick Robinson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I like unusual books, of which this was one. Wonderful story, wonderful progression. Thank you for a really good read.
Buy this book! It says it's a coming of ave novel. I'd say it was several short stories seamlessly integrated with each other to produce a something better than the sum of its parts. I felt myself in the novel as the writing talked a out the children of post depression and WWII parents. The expectations parents put on you and the corners you find yourself in.

I Can only hope for a sequel!!!
Buy this book - you'll be glad you did...
I feel as if this story could be my life. That it may be the life of many. It was a very good read and satisfied my interest in the story line.
I guess I am a little bias, as Rick is my cousin but the book was spot on about our Great Uncle Chippie. The story that Rick
told was so real to me from fishing with his Dad, my Uncle Bucky (Angel) to going into a bar and being told to not say a word to my Mom, Grandma or my Aunt. For me at least, it was a trip down memory lane but for anyone else, its a trip of what would you do, if given the chance, to do what you have always dreamed of doing.

From the moment I picked up the book, I could relate to the main character of the book - and isn't that what it's all about. I'm from the area in and around where the book is set, and it's lovely to hear and reminisce about all of the great old places, most of which aren't around anymore. As someone in their 50's, I could also relate to what has, and hasn't, happened in my life, and this book touched home to that effect. I highly recommend this book - it had me outright laughing in spots, smiling in others, and tearing up in one other. What more could you ask for?
Beside the depicted plot and characters there is a strong message in the main character's story. Although he made a personal decision to leave a life of materialism to a more fulfilling life of meaning and purpose the bigger message was to leave a life of individualism, isolation and alienation in modern society to a better life of a sense of belonging to a group where people genuinely care about each other. And there is no better group to exemplify caring and respect
"Being alone with your thoughts is not pleasant when your thoughts are trending dark." - from Alligator Alley.

Rick Robinson has written a classic novel about male, middle-aged angst. Women, when you ask your man "Whatcha thinking about?" Here's the answer for many men. But they won't tell you.

Robinson writes what most middle aged men left unspoken. He writes it in a straightforward, graceful style. The level of the lead character's self-examine and insight into the life he - and other men - have led is deep and thorough.

In the novel, James Conrad has had a successful life. However, he's not had his life. In his boyhood, he was shown the way. An beloved uncle lead by example that every man should choose his own path no matter the societal pressures. James Conrad, however, was pulled down the path of expectations and the success his parents and town saw for him. But childless and in a loveless marriage at fifty, Conrad, alone on his birthday in south Florida, realizes that he has been conned.

He says, "When you wrap yourself in the charade of success, you live with the fear that someone will peek behind the curtain and discover it's all been a sham. Failure is real. Success is smoke and mirrors."

His journey to fully realizing what his path is takes him from the beaches of an upscale resort, into a Seminole Indian reservations deep into the Everglades where his late uncle lived and into the arms of a woman who serves as a mirror reflecting back the emptiness of his soul.

Alligator Alley is a hopeful work. The book's cover states `because it's never too late to change destiny'. Conrad realizes that fact. As he states, "I was staring fate in the eye and fate was blinking".

Robinson, normally a thriller writer, has the courage in this novel to write with elegance, subtlety and a quiet rhythm possibly based on the lapping of waves against a fishing pier in the `Glades. You'll find yourself stopping and re-reading passages and sentences simply to realize how true they are. You'll find yourself stopping completely and contemplating Conrad's life...and your own. At least, I did.
